Honoring Helen Louise Hughes
Helen Hughes "Momma" (1933-2023)
Born January 26th in 1933, Helen Hughes was born around the great depression, a very difficult time in the United States. She was one of nine children to Grace Burton Lewis and Edgar Lewis.
Helen had eight children of her own including Walter "Butch" (Deceased), Sandra Walker Washington, Viola Kay Walker (Deceased), Jo Ann Walker Sofer, Gwen Walker Dunigan (Deceased), Grace Walker Elmore, Raymond Hughes and Alicia Hughes.
Momma is well known by her children and grandchildren for "the switch". The switch was a branch from the bush next to the back door, that she used to whip your behind if you "got too big for your britches". It is legend that she made you go outside and choose the switch before she whipped you with it. All of us knew that Love was behind the whipping.
Momma was a chef in the kitchen, which made you forget about the switch.
