The Willa A. Washington Community Justice Scholarship is named after Willa A. Washington. Washington served the Cincinnati community as owner of the Stanton Delicatessen, which she started in 1959 with her husband Herbert Washington Jr.. The Stanton Delicatessen employed several people in the Walnut Hills area where it thrived until its closing in 2010. Washington played a small role as a background actor in the hit movie "A Rage in Harlem", starring Gregory Hines. She also was very charitable in the community where she routinely gave food to those who may have been on hard times.
Washington’s service to the community began in 1948 when her family moved into the Hazelwood subdivision and became founding members of Zion Hill Baptist Church where she actively served on the Usher Board and the Senior Choir. She united with the Ebenezer Second Baptist Church in Lincoln Heights, Ohio in the late 1950s and became active in the Senior Choir, Women’s Day and Missionary Committees, and the Board of Trustees. For over 41 years she was an active member in the Buenos El Amigos Federated Club, an affiliate of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs. She also served as treasurer of the Blue Ash Democratic Club.
Her civic contributions to the Hazelwood Community are immense. She was a founding member of the Hazelwood Civic Association in 1967, the Hazelwood Improvement Association in 1968, the Hazelwood Community Organization in 1997 and the Hazelwood Legacy Project in 2001. The University of Cincinnati opened a branch in Blue Ash in 1967 and since that time two generations of her progeny have attended the college. In 1971 one of her children was the first student from Hazelwood to graduate from UC Blue Ash (then Raymond Walters College) and was later honored in 1996 with the college’s coveted Distinguished Alumni Award. As a mother, Washington believed that education and community justice, like charity--begins at home.
The Willa A. Washington Community Justice Scholarships are conducted by the Hazelwood Community organization as well as the Blue Ash Police Department. Both entities along with the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash have provided two scholarships every college school year.
The scholarship is available to all University of Cincinnati Blue Ash students who maintain a 2.5 G.P.A. Applicants are also required to submit an essay explaining their definition of community justice.
